The Ger Districts
After the homeless shelter visit, we accompanied Nara Thompson (one of Tawny's former MTC teachers) on her visits to some of the children whom she sponsors. She runs a charity in Mongolia called Care 4 Kids Worldwide. She chooses 10 children who are risk of dropping out of elementary school. They can't afford the uniforms or supplies or their families might need them to work to make ends meet. Their circumstances are pretty dire. They live in gers or shacks in the ger districts, which are the poorest areas of Ulaan Bataar.
Our first visit was to Gan-Ochir. This is his home, a one-room shack.
Gan-Ochirs mother is dead and his father has been in jail for 10 years.
He gets passed around among family members.
Tawny collected donations from Chase's first grade class in order to buy him a Lego set.
He was so thrilled to get it.
A three-year-old cousin
Nara told us this child is most likely left home alone when Gan-Ochir is at school and his family works. It is very heart-breaking.
A letter from the American children
Trying out the Legos- they couldn't wait.
I tried to give the little boy some candy, but he was too afraid to take it.
After I set it on the bed he snatched it up quickly.
It looks like he is a good friend to his little cousin.
Nara brought food for the family. Each child got an apple, which is quite a treat for them.
She opened their cupboards and saw that they were empty. How I wished that I could take those kids home with me!
We kept two bags of clothes just for him.
Trevor's old shirt and pants look they will fit him.
I love that his clothes are being worn by Mongolian children!

Saying goodbye
Giving us his "American Smile" which we requested
On to the next home
